Curtain length is a practical room decision before it is a styling preference. The hanging point, floor, nearby heat source and way people move all affect what will work. Measure the actual window arrangement rather than assuming a standard drop will be close enough. A useful finish should let the window and room function normally without fabric repeatedly catching or collecting in an awkward place.

Measure from the intended fitting

Follow the supplier's measuring instructions for the chosen curtain and hanging system. Record the actual point from which the drop is measured, not only the top of the window. Measure in more than one place if the floor or fitting is uneven. Keep those dimensions labelled clearly so a shop visit does not become a guess based on a room photograph.

Include movement and heat clearance

Open the door, window and nearby storage as they are normally used. Check whether fabric would obstruct that movement or sit against a radiator or other heat source. Follow the relevant equipment and curtain guidance for clearances. A floor-length look is not useful if it interferes with access or places material where it should not be. Choose the practical boundary before comparing decorative fullness.

Try the proposed line visually

Use a safe temporary paper or fabric indication where appropriate to understand the length in the room. Compare from the doorway and normal seats. A floor-skimming finish gives one effect; a shorter length may suit a busy location better. Neither needs to be judged by a universal interior rule. The window's role and household use should remain visible in the decision.

Read fabric care and size information

Check dimensions, heading style, composition and cleaning guidance for the actual product. A sample's colour and feel do not explain the whole maintenance routine. Ask about any supplied shrinkage or lining information rather than assuming all curtains behave alike after care. Include alteration, installation and cleaning needs in the budget before buying the closest ready-made length.

If the floor is uneven

Record the difference and ask the supplier or competent alteration professional how to achieve the intended practical finish. Do not simply average measurements and accept dragging at one side. A decorative pooling effect is a deliberate choice with more fabric and cleaning implications, not a solution to an unknown floor level. Test whether it suits the room's movement before committing.

Can existing curtains be shortened?

Often a competent specialist can assess that, but lining, trim and heading details affect the work. Get an estimate and explain what should be preserved. Follow safe fitting and current child-safety guidance for the complete system, using suitable help where needed. Maintain according to the fabric and fitting instructions. Good curtains should support the room's ordinary light, privacy and access needs as well as provide the outline you enjoy.
